Boiler remote monitoring
Boiler remote monitoring and phone alerts – Home Assistant and WhatsApp
We build remote monitoring for boilers and boiler houses in Finland and abroad: temperatures and status on a clear dashboard, and alerts to WhatsApp or your phone when something goes wrong with the heating. The system runs on Home Assistant and is tailored to the boiler's interfaces – or we add sensors if there is no interface.
Which boilers?
Remote monitoring can be built by agreement for almost any heating system. Typical sites:
- Wood chip boilers and boiler houses, also on farms
- Pellet boilers and burners
- Oil boilers
- District heating substations
- Ground source and air-to-water heat pumps
- Electric boilers and buffer tanks
- Boiler houses with several boilers
What can be monitored?
- Boiler, flow, return and buffer tank temperatures
- Boiler status: firing, out, fault, ignition failed
- The boiler's own alarm or general alarm
- Flue gas temperature and residual oxygen, if the controller provides them
- Fuel running out or feed faults, if the data is available
- Boiler room temperature, water leaks and power cuts with added sensors
- Starts and running hours as statistics
How do we get the data?
Before quoting, we check which interfaces your boiler has. There are several options:
Modbus TCP or RTU
Many boiler and heat pump controllers have a Modbus interface on the network (TCP) or an RS-485 bus (RTU). Usually the most detailed option: temperatures, status and alarms.
M-Bus
The bus used by energy meters, e.g. in district heating: consumption, power and flow and return temperatures.
KNX and OPC UA
Building and industrial automation buses that Home Assistant can read.
Manufacturer's interface or cloud
If the manufacturer offers an open interface or cloud service, the data can often be fetched from there.
Alarm output (volt-free contact)
Many controllers have a general alarm relay output. We wire it into the monitoring so the alarm reaches your phone – also on older boilers.
Added sensors
Where there is no interface, we install temperature sensors on e.g. the flow and return pipes, the buffer tank and the boiler room, plus water leak and power cut detection if needed.
We do not promise compatibility for a specific brand until we have checked your boiler's controller and its settings.
Alerts where they get noticed
WhatsApp group
Alerts to the whole family or whoever is responsible, in one group. Ask for the status by message (e.g. !tila).
Phone notification
Home Assistant app notification on your phone, also as a backup.
Dashboard and trends
A dashboard with temperatures, status and history – troubleshooting is easier when you can see what happened before a fault.
Reference
Reference: Gilles wood chip boiler
Our first complete package is the Gilles wood chip boiler integration, which we use ourselves and which is freely available on GitHub. For Gilles boilers we offer installation at a fixed price.
- Modbus TCP to the Touch controller, read-only
- 6 WhatsApp alerts and a !tila status command
- On-site installation €1,500 excl. VAT incl. the mini PC
How it works
- 1
Survey
Tell us the boiler make, model and controller – a photo of the rating plate and control panel helps. We find out the interface options.
- 2
Quote
You get a quote: what is monitored, how the data is read and what equipment is needed.
- 3
Installation
We install the mini PC, wiring, sensors and alerts on site.
- 4
Hand-over
We test the alerts and show you how to use the system. We are available for help later.
Why us?
Electrics and sensors from one supplier
We are a Tukes-registered electrical contractor (S2 qualification in Finland), so we also wire alarm outputs and sensors.
Maintenance background
Servicing and inspecting equipment is our job – we know which data actually helps when something fails.
Open, not locked in
Built on open-source Home Assistant. The system is yours, with no mandatory monthly fee to us.
Price
Monitoring for boilers other than Gilles is priced by agreement, as interfaces and sensors vary. You get a quote before any work.
In Finland, travel is charged once per visit according to our travel zones; abroad, travel, accommodation and travel time are quoted per job. We install in Finland and abroad.
Gilles wood chip boiler monitoring: €1,500 excl. VAT (€1,882.50 incl. VAT 25.5 %).
Limitations
- By default the monitoring only reads data and does not control the boiler. Any control is agreed separately and only within the manufacturer's instructions.
- Remote monitoring does not replace the boiler's safety devices, smoke or fire alarms, or statutory obligations such as boiler plant supervision.
- We are not a representative of any boiler manufacturer. Brands are trademarks of their owners.
- Alerts require a working internet connection at the boiler, arranged by the customer.
Travel
Charged once per visit at our standard travel-zone prices. We start from Koski Tl.
| Travel zone 1 (0–50 km) | €85 excl. VAT |
|---|---|
| Travel zone 2 (50–100 km) | €130 excl. VAT |
| Travel zone 3 (100–150 km) | €180 excl. VAT |
| Travel zone 4 (over 150 km) | case by case |

Can remote monitoring be added to an old boiler?
Usually yes. If the controller has no data interface, we use the boiler's alarm output or install temperature sensors on e.g. the flow and return pipes, so you get an alert when the temperature drops too low.
What does boiler remote monitoring cost?
For a Gilles wood chip boiler, installation costs €1,500 excl. VAT including the mini PC. For other boilers the price is agreed per site and you get a quote before any work. Travel according to our travel zones.
Do I need a monthly subscription?
There is no mandatory monthly fee to us. You need an internet connection at the boiler. If you want remote dashboard access via Home Assistant Cloud, that is Home Assistant's own paid service.
Does it replace boiler plant supervision?
No. Remote monitoring is an aid. It does not replace statutory obligations, the boiler's safety devices or scheduled servicing.
Where do you install?
In Finland and abroad – Nordic and Baltic countries, elsewhere in Europe and beyond by arrangement. We start from Koski Tl in Southwest Finland; outside Finland, travel, accommodation and travel time are quoted per job. The integration itself is free for anyone, anywhere, on GitHub.
